PHYSICAL EDUCATION / Overview
At Falk School we know that physical education is an essential part of every student’s complete educational experience and that participation in a structured physical education program will have many physical, cognitive and social benefits for every child. Students have the opportunity to participate in a developmentally appropriate curriculum that promotes overall health, wellness and safety. The students are exposed to a wide variety of creative, organized movement activities that help them understand the importance of maintaining a socially, mentally and physically healthy lifestyle.
Primary / PHYSICAL EDUCATION
At the primary level the students will be engaged in activities throughout the year that are focused on: spatial awareness (low organization activities), fundamental motor patterns, non-locomotor movements, manipulative skills, basic sports skills, cooperative challenges, and fitness activities. Other important focal points of the program include educating students about: respect for themselves, others and equipment; motivational skills; cooperation with others; how to be a good sport; and following rules and safety directions.
Intermediate / PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The intermediate students follow a similar pattern as the primary level but with activities that are more complex and more specific. More time is given to manipulative skills, sport skills and games, cooperative challenges and fitness activities. Students are encouraged at every level to respect, cooperate, and motivate themselves and others. In addition, good sports manners and following rules/directions are essential to their learning.
Middle / PHYSICAL EDUCATION
The middle level students have two main focuses for the year. First, they are actively involved in a fitness cycle. The students work to improve in 5 areas of fitness: agility, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance and muscular strength. The second session of the year concentrates on sports skills and games. Respect, cooperation, motivation, participation, being a good sport, and following rules/directions are necessary aspects to the middle level program.
